General Championship 2018–19 || Sports and Games
The nerve-wracking competition between halls of residence for the general championship 2018–19 crown is up and running. With three out of 15 sports on program completed, we decided to present current standings and a brief description of the sports that have culminated. We will keep updating this as and when a sport concludes.
CRICKET
As we all know that cricket is the most famous and widely played sport in almost all parts of our country, the GC cricket was a delight for all the participants and cricket enthusiasts. All the hall teams played really well and did their best on the ground with a lot of support provided by their fellow hall mates. The results of the league matches held over 4 days on two weekends are as follows:

Semifinals
The cricket final in this year’s general championship will be a repeat of the last edition as both MMM2 and Azad won their respective semifinals in convincing fashion. Playing side by side on the two different grounds in Tata sports complex, both the eventual winners batted first and gave an almost same target for their opponents. The chasing teams never looked promising and both the fixtures eventually resulted in lopsided contests.
Supporters of both the teams as well as cricket enthusiasts will be again hoping for a nail-biting encounter as the previous year’s final between these two teams which was decided in super over after resulting in a tie.

The final match between MMM2 and Azad was a nail-biting encounter as expected although Azad hall of residence avenged their last year’s defeat to MMM as they won the match by 10 runs. Batting first, Azad made a total of 137 for the loss of four wickets. Chasing 138, MMM2 looked quite comfortable as they were 109/4 after 16 overs. With 29 required off 24 balls, the two pacers came back for their second spell and ran through the batting line up of MMM2. The batting team could only score 2 runs when 13 was needed in the final over.
The third-place match between RK and RP was a low scoring affair with RK winning comfortably by 4 wickets.
Senior Sports Officer S K Panda distributed the prizes as Vikas Kumar of MMM2 bagged both the crown of being the highest run scorer as well as the man of the series award. Ashish Agarwal of Azad was the leading wicket-taker with a total of 12 scalps in the tournament.

FOOTBALL
Football enthusiasts of KGP experienced a month full of thrill, cheering up for their halls and endeavoring sportsmanship. The football fever heated up KGP with the kickstart of group matches on 20th January. With a series of thrilling matches, the halls that finally made it to the knockouts were Azad and LLR(Group A), RP and RK(Group B), BRH and Patel(Group C), MS and LBS(Group D).

Teams that made it to the knockouts, had raised the bars and boosted up the football fever which could have been seen clearly in the grounds. The Quarter Finals passed by with the following standings:

Now having the four teams in the semi-finals, GC had the brightest spotlight with the clamors of victories yet. Semi-Finals shined up showcasing sportsmanship pitching the hall tempo to the highest. Semi-Finals ended up with the following standings
Semifinal 1| Azad v/s LBS | Azad won in the penalty shootout by 3–2 to grab a spot in the finals. Match went goalless till the extra-time ended. Finally, the spectators got to witness the thrilling penalty shootout where Azad managed to save 3 out of 5 shots.
Semifinal 2| RP v/s MS |RP defeated MS by 2–0 to make their way into the finals. Scoring a bit of goal in each half they made it to the finals.
The Final Showdown
Finally, battling through the matches, KGP witnessed the two teams standing proud, one big step away from lifting GC. RP and Azad squaring off in the thrilling final of the Football GC had enough intensity to catch the attention of the spectators till the last second.
Azad bagged the GC trophy by defeating RP with a close margin of 1–0.
Bronze Medal Match | MS v/s LBS | MS clinched the Bronze medal by defeating LBS by 1–0.
The award for the best defender went to Ritesh Mandal from MS whereas the Man of the match and Man of the tournament trophies were collected by the goalkeeper of Azad, Devendra Patidar.
